Balaji : Illustrator

Satish Gangaiah is a Bangalore based passionate designer and illustrator who has vast experience ranging from ad agencies, media publishing houses, IT industry etc. He also is an acclaimed commissioned illustrator. Satish has worked for the likes of Snap Chat, Line, Hike, Wipro, 9apps etc.

Why are you an Illustrator?

Honestly, I don’t have an answer, but as a kid the only thing I was good at was drawing. And over a period of many years I have been inspired and influenced by a lot of people, places, music, culture that has shaped me into becoming an illustrator that I am today.

Did you attend school for fine art or design?

Yes. I graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts from the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat here in Bangalore.

You have a distinct style of illustration. How long did it take you to develop your style?

Though I do get inspired from a lot of illustrators and designers from across the globe, I strive to have my own signature style and it is always an ongoing pursuit to match up with the times.

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?

None. But I was always mesmerized by the music I listened to during my formative days. It helps even today.

Who was the most influential personality on your career in Illustrations?

I was lucky to have parents who helped me at all steps in my formative years to hone my skills to become the illustrator that I am today. The publications my father subscribed to during my schooldays played a vital role as I looked forward to some of the art works that were carried in them.

Are many advertising agencies getting illustrations made these days? Do you work more with agencies or publishers?

I have worked previously for advertising agencies but right now I am working mostly with digital design studios around the world.

Was there any time when you wanted to quit Illustrations?

No. Probably I never will.

Have you considered turning your illustrations into toys?

Yes. I have been thinking about it quite seriously and I have plans of turning a few of my characters into toys in the near future.

Any other Indian Illustrators who you admire?

There are many Indian illustrators that I follow on a regular basis along with illustrators across the globe.

You have such a wide experience as a top working professional. What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on Illustration as a career option? Is it paying well enough?

I always have believed that if it is your passion then one must go behind it and make it happen. I am sure todays youth are smart enough to channel their talent into a successful career. I certainly advise them to take up a career in illustration and the passion will pay well.

Whats your dream project?

I would like to author a graphic novel.
